A quick recap of the weekend can be summed up with the following words: wine, dancing, card games, lakes, young engineers, drunken turks, and arrested development. Fill in the blanks.
Of course, now that I have been immersed in Turkish culture for over a month, I have come to realize many things about the country. Turkey, especially Ankara, is particularly throwing us off, because there are many similarities to an industrialized city in America, with the exception of the language, homogeneous group of people, and all the qwerks in between. Because of this, I have compiled an ongoing list that I like to call "The Things That Turks love...."
NOTE: The following list contains actual obsessions by the general population of turks, that being said, this list does not encompass the full spectrum of turkish admirations, and may be argued by the turks that secretly also love these same things.
1) Ataturk- This may well be the biggest and most important obsession of all. For those of you in America who don't know who Ataturk is (a.k.a the entire US population) he was the man who founded the Republic of Turkey after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. He created the modern alphabet, securalism of the country, and strengthened the unity of Turkey. He could very well be called the Jesus of turkey, as he is almost worshipped here in a slightly obsessive way. Every building has a picture of him on the wall, and it is actually illegal to say anything bad about him. He wasn't a bad guy, but picture it like this: If the United States praised every single thing that George Washington did, and absolutely overlooked, nay denied, his flaws, and made it illegal to say anything bad about him....well you get the idea. I wish i could go on, but I don't want to risk deportation.....2) Creationism- This one came as a particular shock to Mackenzie, an avid Darwinist. Mostly, she was amazed at how a school full of engineers and science/logic minded folk do not recognize that we are an animal species and not just a rib...
3) Securalism- As we have heard from several of our Turkish stalkers "Hey this is a free country"...and it is! When Ataturk came to power he made the country a secular nation, even though the population is 99% Muslim. It's great to see that everyone here is equal, and people have thorough human rights...that is , it is free if you are a Muslim man, who loves Ataturk, from a fully turkish background, who supports the ruling party, and not a Kurd, Jew, Christian, Woman, Foreigner, or (gasp) an Armenian.
4) The Music of Enya- I still don't quite get this one, but I hear her soothing voice everywhere.6) Yogurt- Yogurt is put on everything. Meat, rice, vegetables, sunburns (you wish i was kidding). No meal is complete without this bacteria-licious condiment.
7) Ketchup and Mayonaise-Together. on everything. EVERYTHING.
8) Photos- note the increase of my tagged photos on facebook. These people take pictures of every single thing, and they get really upset if you untag...which leads me to my next point....
9) Facebook- we thought we had a bad obsession in the US, it is NOTHING compared to over here. Turks will friend request you before you even have a chance to breathe your last name, and not only that, they will stalk you till the sun rise, and proceed to inquire as to your high school prom. And sweet sixteenth birthday party. And any other information they found while memorizing you profile.
10) Lady Gaga- Well, I guess being obsessed with her is just worldwide.
11) The question "Where are you from?"- i get it at least 6 times a day.
12) "How I met your Mother"- Whats really odd is that apparently the entire world outside the US is OBSESSED with this sitcom. While I know that some people in America tune in (I myself have never seen an episode) it is nothing compared to the obsession that Turkey has with this laugh-tracked TV Show....I can't wait to be the one to tell them that their favorite character, Barney, is actually a flaming homosexual in real life. (Note that homosexuality does NOT make the list of faves....)13) Soccer- this one is a no-brainer, because apparently the US is the only one who missed out on this Earth Memo. Basketball comes in a close second here.
14) Techno Music- "HEY TURKEY! YOUR EUROPEAN IS SHOWING! BAHAHAH"
and Finally (for now)
15) Jamar Torres- Maybe it's his polite face or his cool way of talking, but every single turk is obsessed with my dear pal Jamar. It also could be the fact that he may be the first black person to ever talk to them, it may be because I always introduce him as "The Best Dancer in the Entire United States", it may be his love for kokorech or his ability to make all the ladies (and even some of the men) swoon. Or it may be because he rocks....i mean hey, I am kind of obsessed with him also....so there you have it, the first 15 turkish obsessions....I'll keep a running list as time goes on. (not included in today's list- blonde hair, love confessions, sheep body parts, Lost, and MSN messenger...)
Peace-
The G.
